Recently we had one of the most essential human trials we’ve seen in a generation. This was a timely film about the importance and history of human trials and the risks people take to help humanity. While the film is a radical stem cell treatment for diabetes, it goes so much deeper than that. You can’t help but reflect on the real-life mirror the film offers.
Diabetes kills over five million people a year; that’s a number that hit me a lot harder than I had realized. I knew it was a genuine danger to the world, but I had no clue that it stole that many people from us yearly. This film shows a behind-the-scenes look into a world many don’t see. This is about the heroes who believe in science, those willing to take the small risk to make a breakthrough to save millions. We see the heartache and reward of these trials, the work that goes into them, and the fantastic things they give us all.
If nothing else, the creation and testing of multiple COVID vaccines have proven that we as a world must do better, we must fund and prioritize research for more. Not to take away from the impact, but THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN had a quote that will always stick with me, “We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.” This is true, and we have so many brilliant minds; we must take advantage of them.
The evolution of human trials goes back as far back as 500 BC, but as we learn more and science progresses, these trials become more advanced and less risky. While the COVID trials hold the record for the most extensive trials ever, possibly the most important were the trials that led to the eradication of smallpox and polio.
The fact that we’re so close to the battle against diabetes just proves how much more we need to move forward and add another to the list of things that humankind has overcome. Every breakthrough puts us that much closer to saving millions of lives every year. If you have the opportunity, open your mind and watch this to see the effort put into the study and creation behind these human trials. This was such an eye-opening experience that I will never forget.
